The awards extend beyond traditional academic and athletic honors, highlighting students who embody excellence in departments, clubs, character, service, school spirit, and leadership.

The concept for the Copper Coyote Awards began in 2019 with an initial focus on recognizing athletes. However, Principal Tyler Dumas broadened the vision to encompass the diverse talents and positive impact of students throughout the school. Outstanding students are nominated and selected by each department, service club, and other campus organizations. The first in-person celebration took place in 2023, establishing the Copper Coyotes as an annual tradition rooted in Campo Verde High’s unique campus culture that is centered around the school’s motto, “Every Person, Every Day,” which is often referred to as  “The Campo Way.”

“The Campo Way” is the sense of family and home that students, staff, and community members contribute towards on a daily basis, creating an exceptional and unparalleled academic experience. The school’s pride stems from investing kindness, honesty, and teamwork to build an encouraging support system and strong leadership. From keeping the campus clean to making sure there is a welcoming place for any student, Campo Verde High prioritizes leaving a lasting influence of good character and values for all of its community.

“We had been missing an opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate all our students’ outstanding and noteworthy accomplishments,” said Principal Tyler Dumas. “The Copper Coyote awards recognize exceptional students by highlighting all they have accomplished and how they have positively impacted our school.”

During the Copper Coyote reception, five distinct award categories were presented:

  • The Copper Coyote Award: Recognizing one student from each of Campo Verde High’s 33 departments, programs, and major clubs for their excellence in that specific area.
  • The Campo Way Award: Celebrating students who exemplify strong character, community service, positive values, honor, and academic progress. Two students from each grade level received this award.
  • The Essential Coyote Award: Highlighting an “unsung hero” who is considered vital to the daily lives of the Campo Verde student body and staff. One student was selected for this special recognition.
  • The Spirit of Campo Award: Awarded to a student who demonstrates unwavering school spirit and enthusiastically supports their peers at events while embodying “The Campo Way.”
  • The Outstanding Senior Award: Recognizing graduating seniors from the Class of 2025 who have demonstrated leadership in academics, activities, service, and sports, both within the school and in their broader communities.

In total, 45 students were celebrated during the Copper Coyote Award Reception.
