AgriScience Program of Study

The AgriScience program is designed to prepare students for employment in the Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources career cluster. Students completing this program will possess the appropriate cluster technical knowledge and skills associated with the production, processing, marketing, distribution, financing, and development of agricultural commodities and resources including food, fiber, wood products, natural resources, horticulture, and other plant and animal products/resources. In addition to the required technical skills, students will also develop leadership, advanced employability, critical thinking, applied academic, and life management skills. The program utilizes a delivery system made up of three essential and required components:  formal instruction, experiential education through Supervised Agricultural Experiences (SAE), and leadership and personal development through the Career and Technical Student Organization, FFA.

Agriscience Pathways

Plant Science

The Plant Science Pathway prepares students to work with plant and landscape systems

Year 1: Applied Biological System

Course: AG100 - Applied Biological Systems

Grades: 9, 10 
Semester(s): 2 
Credit: 1.0 
Fee: $15.00 

Prerequisites: None

This course will introduce the basics of agricultural science, animal science, plant science, and agricultural careers. Emphasis will be on finance, management skills, marketing of agricultural products, and leadership development. This course is a prerequisite to other Agricultural Education courses. Leadership development and FFA activities will be emphasized. An approved supervised agricultural experience will be developed and conducted by each student.

Year 2: Plant Science I

Course: AG205 - Plant Science I

Grades: 10, 11, 12
Semester(s): 2 
Credit: 1.0 
Fee: $25.00 

Dual-enrollment available at select campuses:

 AGS164: Plant Growth and Development (MCC, 4-credit course)

Prerequisites: Applied Biological Systems or application and approval

 This course will address the study of plant science. Major topics will be floral design, plant growth and development, soils, propagation, diseases, biotechnology, landscape design, and greenhouse operation. Leadership development and FFA activities will be emphasized. This course will meet one of the District graduation requirements for science, but will not replace Biology. This course will satisfy one-half lab science or one CTE credit for Arizona university entrance requirements. An approved supervised agricultural experience will be developed and conducted by each student.

Year 3: Plant Science II

Course: AG306 - Plant Science II 

Grades: 11, 12 
Semester(s): 2 
Credit: 1.0

AGL189: Landscape Design I (MCC, 3-credit course)

Prerequisites: Plant Science I

 This course will focus on the production and management of horticultural plants. Topics will include greenhouse management, hydroponics management, turf and landscape management and installation, landscape equipment, and biotechnology. Students will prepare to produce, process, and market plants, shrubs, and trees. They will establish, maintain, and manage horticultural enterprises. Leadership development and FFA activities will be emphasized. This course will satisfy one CTE credit for the Arizona university entrance requirements. An approved supervised agricultural experience will be developed and conducted by each student

Year 4: Agricultural Business and Management

AG310: Ag Business and Management

Grades: 11, 12 
Semester(s): 2 
Credit: 1.0 
Fee: $15.00 

Dual-enrollment available at select campuses: 

AGB132: Agribusiness and Management (MCC, 4-credit course)

Prerequisites: 1 year of any Agricultural Education course or application and approval.

This course will emphasize the principles of marketing, profit maximization, business management, personal finance, investing, stocks, computer utilization, and record-keeping. Students will apply agricultural and personal business concepts using word processing, spreadsheets, graphics, databases, presentation, and publishing software. Leadership development and FFA activities will be emphasized. This course will meet the District graduation requirement for Economics upon completion of the entire year. This course will not meet the NCAA requirements for History and Social Sciences. This course will satisfy one CTE credit for Arizona university entrance requirements. An approved supervised agricultural experience will be developed and conducted by each student.
