The Congressional Art Competition is held in every Congressional district around the country and the winners of each district competition get their artwork hung in the Capitol building in Washington DC. The competition is put on by Andy Biggs’ office and this year’s art theme was Arizona history, landscape or wildlife.

20 students are eligible to participate in the competition from each school and the following 20 students’ artwork were voted on by teachers and students at Campo as the best images to represent their school:

  • Delyla Aker (Junior, AP 2-D Art & Design) and Johnathan Ende (Junior, AP 2-D Art & Design)
  • 18 other Digital Photography and AP 2-D Art & Design students: Aaron Minton, Arabela Curtis, Caroline Grimsley,  Eliana Armijo, Ella Eberle, Emily Ryon, Jay Hansen, Kalli Blinson, Katie Skousen, Kayden Klain, Lily Keller, Lisa Lihua Nie, Logan Gratzek, Sydney Prentice, Tanner Marsh, Zara Davis, and Kyla Dayon.

Each participant got to meet the congressman, who took the time to speak to each of them about their art, but two CVHS students came out on top.

Delyla Aker won 1st place for photography taken on a class field trip taken in February to Sedona that included another Digital Photo student and competition participant, Caroline Grimsley, crossing a Sedona Creek (pictured right). Delyla was also awarded a trip for 2 to Washington DC to see her artwork hung and displayed this June. Johnathan Ende's photograph won the People's Choice Award (pictured left).

Lindsey Wallace, Digital Photography teacher at Campo Verde, couldn’t be prouder of these students’ accomplishments. “Delyla is an incredibly talented artist and an even better person. She deserves this honor so much. Johnathan is also a very talented photographer and an overall great guy. His photos are a joy to look at. I'm honestly so proud.”

Each of Campo’s 20 participants is passionate about the arts and that passion has shown through each of their submissions. Their work shows that art matters to our students and their talents deserve to be recognized. GPS and Campo are proud to highlight these incredible students who are excelling in art and photography.

“I'm absolutely thrilled for my students,” says Lindsey Wallace. “We have participated in this competition every year since 2013 and this is the second time a student at Campo has won 1st place. It's a wonderful competition. It truly gives students such confidence and it's a great way to showcase to the community the incredible talent we have at Campo.”
