Sophomore and Junior students who plan to attend a university are strongly recommended to participate in this testing program. By taking the PSAT/NMSQT in the 11th grade, your child may be eligible to enter competitions for college scholarships and other academic recognition programs, including the National Merit Scholarship Program conducted by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. For more information about this, visit www.nationalmerit.org .For other scholarship and recognition programs visit www.collegeboard.org/psat . This link will also help you find more information about college planning, test-taking tips, and answer explanations for practice test questions.

On average, students who take the PSAT/NMSQT score 133 points higher on the SAT than students who do not take the PSAT/NMSQT.  By measuring reading, mathematics, and writing skills, the PSAT/NMSQT provides students with valuable college readiness feedback and tools to help them reach their college goals. Using personalized feedback based on test results, the PSAT/NMSQT provides students with estimated SAT scores as well as a custom SAT study plan.

This test is only given one time per year, in the fall, so students are encouraged to talk with their counselors about it and listen for announcements on when it will be offered.
