Honors English I:

The Honors 9th English course is the first of two pre-AP courses. This course is essential in providing the foundation for advanced English studies, specifically AP Language and AP Literature Composition (college level courses offered junior and senior year). This comprehensive course examines the writing process for narrative, argument, synthesis, and analysis writing. Students will read a variety of non-fiction and fiction texts focusing on the coming of age archetype. Additionally, students will acquire a repertoire of new vocabulary and grammar skills in preparation for standardized college admissions tests and academic writing. The ultimate goal of this course is to help students’ reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills develop in order to achieve college and career readiness.

AP Language and Composition

The AP Language and Composition course is a college level rhetoric course designed to prepare students for analytical, argumentative, and expository writing and to teach students the importance of these modes as a “basis of academic and professional communication, as well as the personal and reflective writing that fosters the development of writing facility in any context” (College Board). The course is organized in units that address the various styles of writing. In each unit the students will read and analyze models of the specific style, participate in practice activities and discussions, and produce writing samples that adhere to the qualities identified through class activities. The culminating assignments of the course include the AP Exam in May and individual and collaborative literacy assessments in which the students create, review, revise, and present works that represent the styles learned throughout the year. Students will compile a portfolio of personal and published essays that would meet the requirements of most entry-level college composition courses.
